Technology, Human Experience and Poker

by Ian Huckabee on October 29, 2009

Gambling 4 KidzWalter Cronkite once said, “All technology terminates in human experience.” He loved to sail; it was his greatest passion. The trimming of the sails and the tying of the knots ensured a mist filled wind, which for him was one of life’s greatest experiences. Some get that same feeling playing poker, which was very evident several nights ago at a local haunt in Chapel Hill, NC. There was no misty wind, but a few spilled beers and lots of laughter offered corollaries for the imaginative. The occasion was to raise money for Kidzu Children’s Museum located at street level just below where the game was played. Technology in the form of Evite got me there. I thought it a hoot that we’d be slamming a few beers and gambling for kids, so I replied “yes,” and the day before, Evite sent me a reminder. Good thing: I’d forgot to put it in my calendar. As I sat there losing hand after hand, er, donating to the museum, I was reminded of Cronkite’s quote. Evite’s nothing new; in fact, I’ll bet old Walt may have received a few himself. But it occurred to me how easy Evite made it to pull together such a large group for such a good cause doing something we’d be doing anyway in smaller groups, and for no cause at all.
